Laptop Security Checklist

Assume that in the next five minutes, your laptop will be lost, stolen or crushed under a steamroller. Now what do you do?

Hopefully this will not happen but if it does, you need to be prepared before it happens. You need to have a plan in place, to ensure that the loss will be limited to the cost of replacement, not a permanent loss of your company data or worse yet, dissemination of data your customers have entrusted you to keep. How embarrassing would it be to go to your customers and tell them you don't know into whose hands their data has fallen?

Here are a few things you should consider:

  • Have a backup of all files on your laptop.
  • Have a login password for each account on the computer.
  • Use strong passwords. See our webpage on creating a Strong Password.
  • Have a software firewall on your laptop even if you have a hardware firewall at your office. This will allow you to confidently connect to the internet in a café, customer office or elsewhere that you have no control over security safeguards.
  • Encrypt your essential data. If your laptop is stolen, don't give the thief easy access to your valuable assets; lock them up with a password and encryption.

These and a variety of other factors should be investigated because the overall security of your laptop depends on how you use it; each person has an individual level of understanding, routines and preferences.
